DP1m150pxSigma has announced new firmware for the DP Merrill series. The firmware, which reflects the versions of the cameras yet provides unified updates across all 3 bodies, can be found here:

http://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/english/new/new_topic.php?id=378

  • Sigma DP1M - V1.04
  • Sigma DP1M - V1.05
  • Sigma DP3M - V1.02

・Improves the stability of operation.
・Improves the precision of bounce flash shooting when ELECTRONIC FLASH EF-610 DG SUPER SA-STTL and ELECTRONIC FLASH EF-610 DG ST SA-STTL are used.
・When you enlarge an image, it used to enlarge the center of the image. However, the new firmware magnifies the image depending on the focusing position.
・It is possible to select the file name of the image either from "SDIM" or "DP1/2/3M".
・It has integrated the color tones of Custom White Balance (Sunlight, Shade, Overcast, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Flash) among the DP Merrill series.
・Corrects the phenomenon that the AEL setting goes back to default if the AEL button is set for "Central AEL + AEL", and alternate MF to AF or vice versa, while it is still displaying the operation icon.
・Corrects the phenomenon that self-timer shooting whilst using P Mode would cancel the program shift for the customized shutter speed and aperture settings if you press the release button.
・Properly displays the image according to the selected magnification percentage.
・Corrects the phenomenon that the selected exposure is not appropriately applied when an external flashgun is used with Custom Mode.
・Corrects the phenomenon that, in rare cases, images are not recorded properly when the battery level is low.
・Corrects the rare phenomenon that the recording process does not go perfectly when the camera is turned off right after taking the image.
・It displays the size of the file when you select an image and open the Image Info Screen.

Art19mmSigma's Art series expanded into the mirrorless market earlier this year with new models of the 19mm and 30mm F2.8 DN series lenses. Whilst similar in focal length and aperture to the DP 1 and 2 Merrill bodies, these low cost optics are a different design, compatible with Sony's NEX and the Panasonic/Olympus Micro Four-Thirds format. A street price around £160 reflects the competitive nature of the mirrorless market, though with no direct comparison the Sigma lenses occupy gaps in the range offered by Olympus and Panasonic/Leica.

NEX users enjoy a 1.5x crop factor - we've reviewed the lenses on the popular Olympus OM-D body which features a 16Mp sensor, in-camera stabilisation and a 2x crop factor as with other Four-Thirds bodies.

An Alternative Process - Iridient Raw Developer 2.1 PDF Print E-mail

rawdeveloper icon lrgSigma's own software, Sigma Photo Pro, has been shipped with every camera Sigma has produced since the SD9 over a decade ago. Having introduced features like the X3 Fill Light that took full advantage of the Foveon's remarkable dynamic range, SPP has evolved slowly and whilst it remains a powerful tool for processing the X3F files produced by the Direct Image Sensor (and until the release of Iridient's Raw developer, the only option for the high resolution 46MP files captured by the SD1 and Merrill series cameras) it is limited compared to third-party offerings available to other camera users.

Iridient's application does not provide the catalogue and organisational power of Aperture and Lightroom, rather, it offers a nuts & bolts approach to editing raw files from almost any camera, with incredible control over curves and interpretation of the data alongside the valuable ability to crop, freely rotate and export files at any size in a variety of formats including batch processing.

Sigma have announced a new fast wide-zoom for APS-C sensor cameras. This industry first presents the 28-52mm (approx.) equivalent focal length with a constant fast maximum aperuture of F1.8. As part of the Art series of lenses, recent models such as the 35mm F1.4 suggest that the optical quality will be exceptional. Fast HSM focusing and internal focus and zoom complete the package. At 810g, with a 9-blade diaphragm and 72mm filter, it's clear the emphasis has been on quality rather than trying to make a compact consumer option.

DP3MerrillFrontThe new DP3 Merrill hit the UK with impeccable timing, shown at Focus on Imaging just 5 years after the original DP1 made its debut. Since that ground-breaking original there have been 4 major versions (and several s/x revisions) of the Foveon-based large-sensor compact and now other manufacturers are eying up the segment. With a range of 3 Sigma can fight the competition on versatility by providing everything from wide to telephoto with 100% familiarity for the user. We look at the 50mm DP3 and see if the trend for impeccablke optics has been upset with a bold new focal length.
